Cedars grow in mixed forests with other trees like maples, spruce and birch.
For centuries, Native Canadians knew and understood the medicinal, practical and spiritual properties of Cedar. They use it to bless homes and at celebrations,could make a tea to treat scurvy, and utilized the wood for building. The wood is water proof and will not rot! Cedar is great for making buckets, fences, singles, canoe parts and anything that will come into contact with water.
The branches and the leaves of the tree contain essential oils, that are used for perfumes, insecticides and medicines. *
Cedar forests are an important habitat for many species of wildlife: birds, snowshoe hare, porcupine, squirrels. White-tailed deer feed on the branches and seeds, while the thick growth provides shelter and warmth in the winter.
One of the oldest Cedar trees in the world, over 1300 years old, can be found in Ontario, on the Niagara Escarpment .
