Replanting Tips

• Call Ontario One before planting. 1-800-400-2255

Proper planting will help your tree to survive.
• They can be replanted anytime when the ground is thawed.
• During winter months, all Canadian trees are dormant. They still need water, but cannot remain in a heated environment without their dormancy being disrupted. If the ground is not frozen, trees can be replanted, providing there is adequate protection from drying winds. Otherwise, hey can be placed on a balcony, in a garage, or other protected outside space until the spring.
• Don't plant trees near water holes, stumps, or rocks.
• Be sure not to plant to close to houses, or walkways. (3-4 feet away)
• “Let it dry and it will die.”
• Be gentle - they are baby trees.
• Dig a deep enough hole to accommodate the root spread, twice as wide as the pot itself. Place the tree as upright as possible, even on hills.
• Lightly loosen roots that appear to be “bound”.
• Ensure the tree is planted at the same depth as it was in the pot.
• Never bury the branches.
• Never leave roots exposed to the air, as they can dry out and die within minutes. Take the baby tree out of the pot at the last moment.
• A shallow 1 to 2 cm dish shaped impression can be left around the planted seedling to contain mulch (1.5 to 2 inches of mulch are recommended) and provide water catchment.
• Do not trim roots. Seedlings need every single tiny root.
• Pack the soil well, but don't over pack it. Press gently but firmly to prevent shocking the roots.
Air pockets can kill roots.
• If for some reason the tree does not survive, do not despair! Such is the cycle of life in our natural world. It will simply break down and return to the earth.
