The wood is strongly aromatic and resistant to decay. Juniper berries are used to flavour gin and are tasty in a hearty stew. In India the wood is burned for incense. Many varieties from North America and Europe have been developed for ornamental purposes. The female fruit, which are berries that have matured form cones, provide food for birds throughout the winter. ( Cedar Waxwings and Blue birds to Turkeys) Their sweetish resinous taste is used for flavouring some foods.
